Gender discrimination is any practice or conduct relating to the restriction, exclusion, and discrimination on the grounds of gender, sex, sexual orientation or pregnancy. It is inclusive of sexual, domestic, physical, verbal, psychological, and socio-economic violence.

One of the CGE's functions and powers, as outlined in section 11 of the CGGE Act 39 of 1996, is that the CGE shall investigate any gender-related issues of its own accord or on receipt of a complaint.

Established in terms of Section 187 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa in order to promote respect for gender equality and the protection, development and attainment of gender equality.

The CGE shall advance promote and protect gender equality in South Africa through undertaking research, public education, policy development, legislative initiatives, effective monitoring and litigation.

Understanding Election Observation with the CGE
Today, the world observes World Water Day, spearheaded by the United Nations. The CGE highlights the vital connection between gender equality and access to safe, fresh water and dignified sanitation. When water services are unreliable or unsafe, women and girls are most affected, increasing unpaid care work and impacting health, safety, education, and employment. CGE calls for gender‑responsive planning in the water sector, safe and accessible water and sanitation facilities, and inclusive participation by all genders. Access to fresh, clean water is a basic human right.
World Water Day
The Commission hosted a webinar on Gender, Religion, and Health, and how these three areas are deeply interconnected and cannot be addressed in isolation. Inequality produced in one space often intensifies harm in another. The webinar is intentionally designed to move from global systemic realities to embodied lived experiences, creating a shared understanding that prepares stakeholders for action-focused interventions to be taken forward through a subsequent implementation-oriented symposium.
