Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng


Commissioner Mofokeng is a full time Commissioner at the CGE and she sits on the Education and Research, IT and Communication, Strategic Planning as well as the Monitoring and Evaluation Committees. She and holds an MBChB Degree from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. She is an expert in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) specialising in Clinical Services, Advisory, Health Policy, Comprehensive Sexuality Education, Training and Facilitation, Advocacy, Global Health Politics and Content Production.

Her experience with policy led her to the National Inter-Ministerial Adolescent SRHR Framework Strategy Technical Committee as a civil society representative and it is through this role that she was invited to Parliament to provide oral submissions to the Multi-Party Women’s Caucus (MPWC) of the Parliament of South Africa.

Commissioner Mofokeng has also briefed the United States’ Senate on the “Impact of the Global Gag rule” in South Africa and the region. She is the first ever civil society member to deliver a statement to the United Nations Human Rights Council 36th Session on using Human Rights standards to ensure access to safe abortion across the world. She is a member of the International Sexual and Reproductive Rights Coalition (ISRRC) and represented the region at the 50th United Nations’ Commission on Population Development (CPD). Commissioner Mofokeng is a Vice-Chairperson of the Board of Soul City Institute for Social Justice, Vice Chairperson of Board Sex Worker Education & Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT), Country Co-lead for Global Doctors for Choice and member of the Safe Abortion Action Fund Board (SAAF).

She has presented health documentaries on Al Jazeera (English), produced a 12-part series for the Higher Education and Training HIV/AIDS Programme (HEAIDS) and is a contributor to the Global Advisory Board Sexual Health & Well-being’s (GABSHW) Healthcare Provider Toolkit. She is a contributor to multiple news and production media across all platforms, a columnist for the Sunday Times, Daily Maverick, Mail & Guardian and is internationally published in The Guardian, Teen Vogue and Project Syndicate. She has delivered a keynote address at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Goalkeepers awards in Berlin, Capitol Hill Days for Population Connection Action Fund in Washington D.C. She has provided training to the Department of Social Development communications team on “Media reporting on LGBTQIA+, delivered a series of extra-curricular workshops to health campuses across South Africa and has lectured in Wesleyan College in West Virginia and Douglass Friends of UNFPA at Rutgers University. Her work has been recognised regionally and internationally – more recently she received the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 120under40 New Generation Leader in Family Planning Award, recognised for her work on Gender Equality at the Goalkeepers Awards. She is an Aspen New Voices Fellow and the International Women’s Health Coalition’s Advocacy in Practice Alumna.
